Ruige Enters the RMB 300,000 Segment; Kaidilake's Battle Hymn Has Resounded

Isaiah

Kaidilake is becoming increasingly aggressive in the pure electric vehicle market.

At the Guangzhou Auto Show on November 17, the Cadillac Ruige Rear-Wheel Drive Standard Range Luxury Edition (hereinafter referred to as the "Standard Range") was officially launched at a price of RMB 297,700.

This means that for a mid-to-large luxury SUV with a length exceeding 5 meters and a wheelbase over 3 meters, the standard-range Ruige has entered the pricing tier of most mainstream luxury mid-size SUVs.

In the prime years of the transition from fuel vehicles to new energy vehicles, Kaidilake's performance has become increasingly competitive.

To put it another way, at the RMB 297,700 price point, Kaidilake is moving forward with a lighter burden after shedding some of its previous pricing pressures in the new energy vehicle market.

With the burden of pricing alleviated, Kaidilake gains more discretionary power to pursue broader development space amid today's intractable market involution.

01Creating Class-Leading Value: A Move Toward Downward Disruption?

As the price drops, the value of the standard-range Ruige continues to rise, offering a value proposition that is nearly impossible for either comparable internal combustion engine vehicles or new energy vehicles in the same price bracket.

Smaller Battery, Uncompromised Capability

The primary reason the standard-range Ruige can be offered at RMB 297,700 is the reduction in battery capacity—from 95.7 kWh to 68.4 kWh. Consequently, the CLTC range has decreased from 653 km to 502 km.

This change is, in fact, inseparable from Kaidilake's observation of the actual needs of Ruige users.

According to official surveys by Kaidilake, Ruige owners drive an average of 284 km per week, with 84% of users driving less than 500 km weekly.

Therefore, for Ruige users, the value of the 95.7 kWh large battery in the long-range version is partially wasted, resulting in unnecessary expenditure.

Therefore, Kaidilake needs a product like the Ruige standard-range version to supplement the Ruige lineup and better align with users' actual needs.

Meanwhile, even with reduced battery capacity, the practical value of the Ruige standard-range version's range is not compromised. The key lies in its robust electric control capabilities, which deliver solid range performance.

According to official data, the Ruige standard-range version achieves an energy consumption of 14.4 kWh per 100 km. This figure is undoubtedly at the leading edge of the industry.

As for the actual range capability of the Ruige standard-range version, stay tuned for our upcoming review. In the meantime, you can refer to our previous test of the Ruige long-range luxury version on 42Test.

During the test, the long-range luxury version started with a fully charged displayed range of 522 km. Under conditions of outdoor temperatures between 15–19 °C, air conditioning set to 22 °C at fan speed 2, and sustained driving at 120 km/h, Ruige long-range luxury version traveled a total of 480 km before reaching a remaining battery level of 1.5%, with an energy consumption of 19.3 kWh/100 km.

Clearly, the range performance of the Ruige long-range luxury version is relatively steady and reliable.

By extension, issues such as inflated range claims are unlikely to affect the Ruige standard-range version. For daily commuting primarily within one’s city, the Ruige standard-range version can fully meet range requirements.

Furthermore, precisely because Kaidilake reduced the battery capacity in the standard-range version of Ruige, the standard-range version actually performs better than the long-range variant in other aspects — first, the fast-charging time has been shortened to 33 minutes; second, the vehicle weight is reduced, bringing the zero-to-100 km/h acceleration time down to 5.9 seconds.

Thus, while the Ruige standard-range version sacrifices some battery capacity and range, it delivers a better user experience in terms of charging speed and acceleration without compromising practical usability. Crucially, these trade-offs create significant room for price reductions.

A Classic "American" Ride

Despite the downsized battery, Kaidilake has made no compromises whatsoever in maintaining its consistent "American luxury" ethos in the Ruige standard-range version.

In terms of exterior dimensions, the Ruige standard-range version measures 5,003 x 1,977 x 1,637 mm, with a wheelbase of 3,094 mm. This firmly positions it as a mid-size SUV, closely approaching higher-priced models like the BMW X5L, and significantly surpassing competitors at similar price points such as the NIO ES6 and BMW iX3.

The mid-size SUV body gives the Ruige standard-range version a commanding presence. Enhanced by the family-design front fascia characteristic of the Ruige lineup, the model retains the strong visual impact and design distinctiveness of the series.

Inside, the Ruige standard-range version continues to feature extensive leather upholstery and comfortable, sofa-like seats that exude luxury. Compared to mainstream luxury brands and new-energy rivals in the same price segment, it adds a touch of classic refinement through meticulously crafted details such as wood trim and engraved knobs. When the ambient lighting is activated, this sense of classic quality becomes even more pronounced.

While maintaining its classic luxury feel, the vehicle also embraces a more modern, tech-forward aesthetic.

The standard-range Ruige continues to feature the Gaotongxiaolong 8155 cockpit chip and a 33-inch 9K panoramic ultra-retina display. At the auto show press conference, Kaidilake announced that IQ OS V3.0 will be rolled out in phases soon, bringing Migushipin and Kugouyinyue online to further enrich users' entertainment experience.

Notably, the standard-range Ruige has not compromised on "American luxury" features. Based on user feedback, it also incorporates several practical design adjustments, such as replacing touch-sensitive door handles with pop-out handles, adding card-style key fobs, and including anti-glare rearview mirrors.

Overall, entering the RMB 300,000-level premium pure-electric market, the standard-range Ruige offers class-leading space, an authentic dedicated EV platform, and sincere intelligent configurations compared to mainstream luxury brand models at similar price points.

Compared to high-end new-energy brand models at the same price level, the standard-range Ruige still provides superior space, distinctive design, deeper brand heritage, and more robust, stable range performance.

In short, the Ruige standard-range version offers value surpassing the 300,000 level at a price point of the 300,000 level, with very prominent product competitiveness.

For some competing models, the standard-range Ruige represents a near-dimensional strike in terms of product strength, which could drive sales for Kaidilake in the pure electric market significantly higher than current levels.

The Second Half: Pure Electric

Although it is often said in the new energy vehicle market that a long brand history can become a burden during transformation, Kaidilake’s 120-year heritage has not turned it into an old-fashioned stubbornness. On the contrary, it appears more agile than other brands with similar historical ages.

From being among the mainstream luxury brands to first launch the Ruige based on a dedicated pure electric platform, to continuously adjusting prices and benefits to adapt to price wars, and now deploying a major move by launching the standard-range Ruige with cross-class value.

At this juncture of surging variables, Kaidilake has been continuously clarifying its relationship with the market to find a better fit with the evolving new energy vehicle market.

To clarify this relationship, one crucial tool is user needs. However, identifying these needs and addressing them quickly is not an easy task.

For Kaidilake, just as with the launch of the standard-range Ruige, discovering needs stems from the brand's focus on users; when it comes to solving them, the core strength lies in Aotenengzhidianpingtai.

Aotenengzhidianpingtai is the pure electric vehicle platform launched by Shangqitongyong in 2021. On one hand, it provides significant empowerment to the models it produces in terms of performance, intelligence, and safety; on the other hand, it features high flexibility, capable of meeting the needs of different driving ranges, drivetrain configurations, and performance levels. Meanwhile, backed by Shangqitongyong, Aotenengzhidianpingtai also possesses strong scale advantages.

Based on Aotenengzhidianpingtai, Kaidilake can confidently emphasize the "equal pricing for gasoline and electric vehicles" route in the new energy market, has the ability to adjust prices in step with the rapidly changing market rhythm, and can even achieve more competitive pricing than models in the same class.

Notably, to expand its influence in the new energy vehicle market, Kaidilake showcased not only the standard-range version of Ruige at this year's Guangzhou Auto Show but also made the debut of OPTIQ, a new all-electric model scheduled for launch next year.

However, Kaidilake has not yet released detailed information about the OPTIQ. According to data already registered with China's Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, the OPTIQ measures 4,822 mm in length, 1,912 mm in width, and 1,642 / 1,644 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,954 mm. In terms of size positioning, it is one level smaller than the Ruige series,

According to official plans, Kaidilake will launch two additional all-electric models next year besides the OPTIQ, further expanding its pure electric product portfolio.

It is evident that with the Ruige series as the vanguard, Kaidilake is making unremitting efforts to enter the new energy market. As Gu Yebin, head of marketing at Kaidilake, stated:

The theme of Kaidilake's second half is IQ Pure Electric. Based on Aotenengzhidianpingtai, Kaidilake's IQ Pure Electric products have a very significant advantage, which is 'stronger inside, stunning outside'.

With pure electric vehicles at its core, while rapidly expanding its lineup of BEVs, Kaidilake is also simultaneously refining its charging infrastructure.

Currently, Kaidilake has partnered with Tesla to support charging at charging piles that Tesla has opened to non-Tesla vehicles. Moreover, on the day of the launch event, Nanfangdianwang charging piles were fully launched on the Kaidilake IQ APP.

According to the latest official data, Kaidilake currently has access to 580,000 charging piles across more than 320 cities nationwide.

In the current market transition period, which is full of tension and anxiety yet also brimming with high morale, Kaidilake’s new energy ecosystem, including its product lineup and charging network, is gradually becoming richer and more mature.

Of course, to ultimately convert these efforts into real sales figures, Kaidilake still needs to continue laying out its plans step by step, putting in hard work in areas such as brand, products, and pricing.

From the perspective of the Ruige standard-range version, Kaidilake has unleashed more aggressive and potentially rewarding power in the new energy vehicle market. Whether the Ruige standard-range can help Kaidilake sound the first victory chord in the second half of the pure electric era remains to be seen.

03Conclusion

With its entry into the new energy vehicle market, the reshaping of market dynamics is instilling a profound sense of crisis across all brands.

Whether they are new entrants or established players, brands are caught in the fray—shaped by fierce competition while simultaneously shaping it themselves.

Kaidilake is among them, and naturally, it has also been swayed by the brutal competition at times.

However, from dedicated EV platforms to the 8155 chip, from expanding its product lineup to a complete charging network, and from purely human-driven operation to intelligent driving, Kaidilake has kept pace with user needs and market changes at every step under the major trends of electrification and intelligence.

Now, with the starting price of the Cadillac Lyriq series dropping into the RMB 300,000 tier, this move not only opens up new possibilities for the brand’s pure-electric sales but also poses a difficult challenge to other mainstream luxury brands on how to compete effectively in the RMB 300,000-level pure-electric segment.

This implies that the overall market landscape is becoming even more complex and unpredictable due to intense competition.
