6- and 7-Seater SUVs Target Families, but DENZA N8 Is Different

Isaiah

Many so-called SUVs on the market today are, in fact, pseudo-SUVs. They focus only on specific family-oriented features, significantly compromising the versatile nature that defines an SUV.

DENZA Sales Business Division General Manager Zhao Changjiang stated.

To balance family needs with off-road capability and preserve the SUV’s full versatility, DENZA launched the DENZA N8 on August 6 with precisely this goal in mind.

The DENZA N8 is available in two versions:

Four-Wheel Drive Super Hybrid Flagship Six-Seat Edition at RMB 326,800;

Four-Wheel Drive Super Hybrid Flagship Seven-Seat Edition at RMB 319,800.

In addition, the DENZA N8 comes with more than 200 standard features, including the Yunnian - C Zhinengzunicheshenkongzhixitong, CCT Shushikongzhixitong, and full-vehicle Nappa leather seats.

DENZA has also introduced benefits such as a RMB 2,000 deposit that deducts RMB 10,000 from the final price, along with exclusive trade-in privileges for existing DENZA owners.

Given the statement that "many so-called SUVs on the market can only be called pseudo-SUVs," let us now examine what genuine capabilities the DENZA N8 actually possesses.

01Capable in Both City and Wilderness

DENZA believes that "an all-scenario SUV capable of handling both city driving and off-road adventures meets the needs of contemporary consumers."

Therefore, the product configuration of the DENZA N8 is centered around the concept of being "capable in both city and wilderness."

Wild Exterior, Luxurious Interior

The DENZA N8 is the successor to the DENZA X. Consequently, its exterior design retains some characteristics of the DENZA X, such as the headlight design. However, in terms of overall styling, the DENZA N8 differs significantly from the DENZA X.

First, in terms of dimensions, the DENZA N8 measures 4,989 x 1,950 x 1,725 mm in length, width, and height, with a wheelbase of 2,830 mm. Compared to the DENZA X, it is 59 mm longer, while the width and height remain unchanged, and the wheelbase has increased by 10 mm. Consequently, the DENZA N8 offers improved interior space.

Second, regarding its front fascia, the DENZA N8 shares design DNA with the DENZA N7, incorporating DENZA’s latest π-MOTION family design language. This enhances brand recognition, and the presence of a front grille along with a low-front, high-rear body profile further accentuates the vehicle's off-road and sporty character.

The exterior focuses on creating an off-road and sporty character, while the DENZA N8 interior places its emphasis on cultivating a luxurious atmosphere.

The DENZA N8’s cabin features extensive soft-touch materials, suede-like fabric on the headliner, and crystal trim pieces on the gear selector and air vents, providing users with a more considerate and approachable feel.

Notably, regarding seat upholstery, the DENZA N8 distinguishes itself from competitors in its class by using Nappa leather not just on contact surfaces, but for the entire seat wrapping, adding a greater sense of luxury to the cabin.

Additionally, the DENZA N8 supports Karaoke and Gaming modes. In Gaming mode, the DENZA N8 made its global debut with a decouplable steering wheel that supports external game controllers, enhancing the gaming experience.

This decoupled steering wheel has proven to be excellent in real-world testing by our team.

Off-Road Performance: 'Far Ahead'

As DENZA describes the N8 as an 'off-road family vehicle,' the brand has spared no effort in developing its off-road capabilities.

The DENZA N8 is equipped with the DM-p Chaojihundongxitong, paired with the EHS Dianhunxitong and a 1.5 T Xiaoyun engine featuring a 40.12% high thermal efficiency. The combined motor power output is 360 kW, with a 0–100 km/h acceleration time of 4.3 seconds.

Meanwhile, the DENZA N8 inherits and upgrades the Mercedes-Benz chassis tuning from the DENZA X. It is equipped with the Yunnian - C Zhinengzunicheshenkongzhixitong and CCT comfort control technology, and also supports OTA updates.

In terms of four-wheel-drive performance, the DENZA N8 utilizes electric four-wheel drive instead of traditional mechanical systems, offering shorter and more precise power delivery paths. It also includes a rear mechanical differential lock to significantly enhance recovery capability and improve the user's off-road experience.

Of course, strong off-road performance must be matched by efficient refueling and cost-effective daily use.

The DENZA N8 is equipped with a 45.8 kWh hybrid-specific Blade battery, supporting 90 kW fast charging for the plug-in hybrid variant. Under NEDC testing conditions, it offers an electric-only range of 216 km and a combined range of 1,030 km, with a fuel consumption of 6.45 L/100 km in depleted-battery mode.

Regarding the DENZA N8’s off-road capabilities, Zhao Changjiang even used the term "far ahead" during his presentation.

Smart Features Focus on Adequacy

In terms of smart cabin technology, the DENZA N8 features the DENZA Link ultra-smart interactive cockpit. This system enables three-screen linkage between a 12.3-inch instrument cluster display, a W-HUD, and a 15.6-inch central control screen. It also supports voice control covering 1,000 vehicle functions and allows for instant dialogue across four audio zones.

For intelligent driving, the DENZA N8 comes standard with the DENZA Pilot intelligent driver assistance system. Equipped with 12 ultrasonic radars, five high-precision millimeter-wave radars, four surround-view cameras, and one high-perception camera, it provides Level 2+ driver assistance.

However, because the DENZA N8 is defined for both city and off-road use, it does not include advanced driver assistance configurations similar to those of the DENZA N7 Tianshenzhiyan.

For the target user base of the DENZA N8, even if equipped with advanced driver assistance features, their practical utility would likely be limited. Such additions might instead unnecessarily increase the purchase price.

Overall, DENZA has put considerable effort into the "capable in both city and off-road" positioning of the N8.

Whether it can prove Zhao Changjiang's point that many SUVs are pseudo-SUVs is debatable, but based on our testing, the DENZA N8 handles light off-pavement driving without issue, demonstrating genuine multi-purpose utility for an SUV.

However, during serious off-roading, care must be taken to protect the battery pack located at the vehicle's underbody; severe bottoming-out could result in significant damage.

02DENZA enters a fast-growth phase

Less than a month after the launch of the DENZA N7 on July 3, DENZA released the DENZA N8.

Although the DENZA N8 overlaps in price with the DENZA N7 (priced between RMB 301,800 and RMB 379,800), the two models target different user groups and have distinct product definitions, so they will not cannibalize each other's sales.

As noted above, the DENZA N8 is a plug-in hybrid designed to balance family needs with off-road capability, offering stronger multi-purpose attributes. In contrast, the DENZA N7 sets the tone for the brand's electrification and intelligence strategy. Despite both being SUVs, they are fundamentally different products.

The DENZA N8 and N9 will not cannibalize each other; rather, the DENZA N8, N7, and even the D9 MPV all cluster within the RMB 300,000–500,000 price range. This allows DENZA to concentrate resources on breaking through this segment, targeting specific user needs and preferences within that bracket to maximize impact.

This signals two things: first, DENZA is deliberately establishing and strengthening its brand image in the RMB 300,000 to 500,000 price segment; second, the sequential launch of three models—D9, N7, and N8—within a year, each targeting different user groups, demonstrates that DENZA’s responsiveness and speed are continuously improving amid a fiercely competitive market.

Additionally, DENZA N8’s SKU configuration reveals some of the brand’s strategic nuances.

DENZA N8 offers only two variants: the Four-Wheel Drive Super Hybrid Flagship Six-Seat Edition and the Four-Wheel Drive Super Hybrid Flagship Seven-Seat Edition. The differences between these two versions are almost exclusively limited to seating capacity and middle-row seat configurations. For other features such as driver assistance and smart cockpit systems, DENZA N8 includes most specifications as standard equipment across the board.

For consumers, this significantly reduces decision-making complexity, enabling faster purchase decisions. Simultaneously, accelerating consumer decisions helps DENZA hasten the sales momentum for the N8.

From this perspective, the DENZA N8 not only possesses competitively strong product capabilities but also lays thorough groundwork for sales execution.

In reality, DENZA—a new energy brand with thirteen years of history, during which it remained largely dormant for ten years—must exert every effort to navigate today’s hyper-competitive, cutthroat market environment from all angles.

Since the brand’s revitalization last year and the launch of the DENZA D9, DENZA has rapidly climbed the MPV sales rankings, shedding its previous obscurity and re-entering consumer awareness. To date, the DENZA D9 has been chosen by more than 100,000 users, and the brand aims to achieve monthly sales of 15,000 units for the D9 by year-end.

In July, the DENZA N7 launched. Backed by BYD, DENZA introduced its 'Tianshenzhiyan' advanced driver assistance system (ADAS), entering the intelligent driving arena. Within 24 hours of launch, it secured more than 10,000 orders, with a 35% adoption rate for the ADAS option.

With the release of the DENZA N8, the brand has accelerated onto a fast track, marking a new milestone in its revitalization.

In the new energy vehicle market, DENZA, which started late but gained momentum, is now unleashing strength accumulated over many years.

However, it must be acknowledged that the price war continues and is expected to persist for some time. In the 300,000–500,000 RMB segment where DENZA operates, heavyweights such as NIO, Lixiang, Zeekr, and AVATR are actively positioning themselves, making competition fierce.

Facing pressure from the price war and intensifying rivalry, DENZA still needs a longer-term, more comprehensive strategy to amplify and sustain the strength it has already released.
