MINI Aceman: A New Electric Five-Door Model Filling the Gap Left by Cooper and Clubman

Jiang Xiao Hei

Have you ever fallen in love with a car because of a movie?

When I was young, I watched the film The Italian Job. I can barely remember the plot now, but one scene remains vivid: three MINI Cooper (R53) models carrying gold through the streets and subway tunnels of Los Angeles.

At the time, I even felt that those three MINIs were the true protagonists of the film. From then on, MINI secured its place in my heart thanks to its agile handling and high performance. But in the early 2000s, an imported three-door MINI was far out of reach for average consumers in terms of both price and practicality.

MINI eventually recognized the need for practicality, launching two new lines based on the compact Cooper: the five-door MINI Cooper and the Clubman. However, both models were discontinued last year. This has left many wondering: Has MINI abandoned small, five-door, five-seater cars altogether?

MINI is certainly not willing to let such a lucrative market opportunity slip away. At the Beijing Auto Show, MINI unveiled its new Aceman lineup. The Aceman fills the gap left by small five-door MINIs, offering more character and interest than both the Cooper 5-door and the Clubman. Its localized production and fully electric powertrain have also brought the brand closer to Chinese consumers.

01Distinctly MINI, Yet Unconventional

The MINI Aceman’s more individual character is mainly reflected in its quirky exterior design. From a distance, the Aceman’s rounded style, four-wheel-four-corner layout, and Union Jack taillights make it instantly recognizable as a MINI. This is exactly what Ms. Wu Sizhuo, Senior Vice President of MINI, said: "MINI model development has always maintained the same proportions and the same design." However, the Aceman is more crossover-oriented, incorporating SUV-style elements such as roof rails similar to those on the Countryman and off-road cladding, making it look wilder. Moreover, the angular headlight design gives the Aceman an independent design language.

In terms of exterior styling packages, the Aceman offers an artistic, urban-focused aesthetic. For the domestic market, MINI has also introduced a JCW (John Cooper Works) version with racing heritage—a rare move among brands that localize their high-performance variants.

The Aceman’s distinct personality is shaped by the various packages available. Ms. Wu Sizhuo noted that MINI vehicles choose their owners rather than the other way around, making the Aceman particularly well-suited for consumers who value individuality.

If the MINI Aceman were my own car, I would definitely be the type of owner who looks back at it every time I lock it.

02The Electric MINI Understands Emotional Value

This electrification, combined with technology from the BMW Group, has brought significant advantages to the Aceman.

In my view, the most striking feature is the MINI Aceman’s cabin design. Although the Aceman adopts MINI’s new-generation design language, it retains traditional circular styling cues, including a console below the center dashboard that resembles an aircraft-style gear selector.

The Aceman’s interior design is new in its details, incorporating many thoughtful touches. The entire center dashboard avoids extensive use of leather materials, opting instead for eco-friendly fabric. MINI cleverly utilizes this fabric material, introducing color-blocking treatments that resemble customized running shoes in Nike By You. Beneath this fabric layer, MINI has hidden ambient lighting, creating a playful and vibrant visual impression.

Thanks to digital technology, MINI's center console has become more streamlined. The instrument cluster has been pushed back into the Head-Up Display (HUD); the traditional circular analog gauges have evolved from embedded LCD screens directly to the industry's first circular OLED screen. This is my favorite feature in the entire vehicle.

The screen features eight preset theme modes, including a go-kart style that pairs well with JCW, a lively dynamic style, a classic style with circular speedometers, and a personalized style that allows users to upload their own photos. I couldn't pick just one favorite or most-used mode; instead, I switch styles occasionally to match my mood.

Regardless of the mode selected, the four corners of the central display show power output curves, battery level, and dual-zone climate control settings for the driver and front passenger. A fixed Dock bar remains at the bottom. This operational logic resembles popular smartwatches, making it very intuitive to use.

There is also a voice assistant named 'Cute Pet SPIKE,' which shares some lineage with the MINI brand as a cartoon bulldog character. Combined with interactive animations, it feels particularly approachable. Moreover, SPIKE's voice tone matches its cute image perfectly. For the new generation of MINI owners, this provides a sense of novelty and transforms the tool into something with emotional connection.

So, the effort MINI puts into interior design is completely different from that of mainstream family cars; in today’s popular parlance, MINI delivers emotional value to its users.

The shift to electrification brings another advantage: it allows for a long wheelbase and spacious cabin within the compact footprint characteristic of the four-wheel-at-the-corners layout.

Let’s look at some data first. The five-door MINI Cooper has an overall length of 3,993 mm and a wheelbase of just 2,567 mm; the Clubman measures 4,263 mm in length with a wheelbase of only 2,670 mm. In contrast, the Aceman, at 4,076 mm in length—comparable to the five-door Cooper—boasts a wheelbase of 2,606 mm.

Thus, while maintaining the compact size that enthusiasts love, the five-door Aceman offers reasonable and sufficient second-row seating and trunk space (300 L–1,005 L). This makes the Aceman’s space adequate for its target audience, whether they are looking for a second vehicle or young people planning trips with three or five friends.

03Does the Aceman Have a Karting DNA?

In the movie The Italian Job, the MINI Cooper stood out on screen for its compact size and agility. Subsequent MINI models have been hailed as 'home karting' vehicles, earning popularity among users of all genders. Although the electrified MINI lacks an internal combustion engine, Ms. Wu Sizhuo stated that the brand still delivers kart-like driving fun.

The MINI Aceman S offers a maximum power output of 160 kW and 330 N·m of torque, with an acceleration time from zero to 100 km/h of 7.3 seconds. It is also available with the JCW package. Based on MINI’s traditional driving dynamics, rapid acceleration has never been the brand’s primary emphasis. Instead, MINI prioritizes driving enjoyment and the sense of communication between the driver and the vehicle—even in the GP model. This perspective sparked my anticipation as a hot-hatch enthusiast to see how the electric MINI would evolve.

With technical support from the BMW Group, features such as basic driver assistance and parking assist have been integrated into the MINI lineup, making the already agile MINI easier to maneuver in urban environments.

Finally, addressing range concerns: the MINI Aceman is equipped with a battery pack up to 54.2 kWh, offering a maximum CLTC range of 450 km. The battery can charge from 10% to 80% in 31 minutes.

This range is sufficient for daily commuting and short suburban trips, making it a practical choice as a second household vehicle or a fun weekend toy. Most importantly, given equivalent power output, the all-electric MINI will significantly reduce ownership costs compared to its fuel-powered counterparts equipped with the B48 engine. Driving a hot hatch should be about enjoyment, not fuel economy; this shift effectively removes the anxiety often associated with performance driving.

04Conclusion

With its quirky exterior design, distinctive interior, and emotionally engaging interactions, combined with a five-door, five-seat layout, the MINI Aceman is a vehicle that caters comprehensively to users' emotional needs—it is more than just a large toy.

Supported by BMW Group’s technology, MINI retains a team dedicated to preserving its original design philosophy and brand positioning, while benefiting from excellent quality control, innovative smart features, and outstanding engineering tuning. These advantages are not limited to the Aceman but extend to models like the Countryman and Cooper alike.

Furthermore, the introduction of locally produced MINI products in China brings the brand closer to Chinese consumers. We look forward to MINI launching more interesting models and localized features in the Chinese market in the future.
